Think carefully before you buy a 4x4
Not only are 4-wheel drives very expensive, but they also consume a great deal of fuel. They produce twice as much carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and nitrogen dioxide as an ordinary car. These chemical substances add to atmospheric pollution and global warming.
Getting a new car?
Why not buy one of the latest generation of environmentally-friendly models? Hybrid cars consume 20 to 30% less fuel and emit far less CO² than a standard car, meaning you can cut both pollution and running costs.
Ensure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure
They will last longer and you will spend less money on tyres. You will also help cut back on the use of precious resources – it takes 27 litres of crude oil to make a tyre. Under-inflated tyres also increase fuel consumption by 10%. Check your tyre pressure at least once a month – it only takes a few minutes.
Slow down!
Try to drive at a fairly steady speed and anticipate possible changes to the driving environment. Avoid accelerating rapidly or braking suddenly where possible. This will reduce your fuel consumption.
Get a professional to change your oil for you
Bring your car to a garage for its oil change. The used oil will be collected and recycled.
Oil leaks?
Did you know that oil-based pollution in the sea is mostly derived from land-based human activity rather than spillages or leaks from oil tankers? If you notice your car has an oil leak, repair it immediately! Never pour waste oil down the storm drain.
